When to choose a sailcloth marquee
Sailcloth marquees are at their best in daylight. The translucent fabric creates a warm, diffused glow that looks stunning in photos. They suit outdoor weddings on country estates, vineyards and open farmland where the landscape is part of the experience. The sculpted peaks give them a distinctive silhouette that traditional marquees can't match.
The trade-off is cost. Sailcloth marquees are typically 2-3x the price of a traditional pole marquee because the fabric is more expensive, the wooden poles are hand-crafted, and setup takes longer. There are also fewer suppliers in the UK, so availability in peak season is tighter.
When to choose a traditional marquee
Traditional pole marquees are the workhorse of the UK marquee industry. They're widely available, competitively priced and proven in British weather. The white canvas exterior is a familiar sight at country weddings, village fetes and garden parties.
The interior can be transformed with linings, lighting and draping to suit almost any style. Centre poles can be decorated (wrapped in fairy lights or fabric) rather than hidden. For events where the marquee is primarily shelter rather than the focal point, a traditional marquee delivers without stretching the budget.
The verdict
If your budget allows and your event is during the lighter months, a sailcloth marquee creates a more distinctive atmosphere. If you need reliability, value and year-round suitability, a traditional pole marquee is the pragmatic choice. Both can look exceptional with the right styling — the difference is in the starting point.
